Artist Jaclyn Jacunski is drawn to how objects carry their own histories: The surface, texture, shape, and resistance of an object hold and convey meaning. A material’s qualities can be utilized in the studio to produce tactile marks and imagery that are unique to that object.

In this workshop, Jaclyn invites us to use everyday objects as markmaking tools. Together, we will learn silicone stamp casting and monoprinting, working from a personal, found, or repurposed object to create a body of unique layered prints.

After learning about Jaclyn’s practice, which moves fluidly between 3-D sculptural work and 2-D print-based work, we will cast a silicone stamp from an object of our choosing, preserving its surface and texture for later use. While stamps cure, we delve into individual and collaborative monoprinting using ink, masks, and a printing press. Once cured, our new stamps can be used alongside various monoprinting techniques, building images through layering, repetition, and quick iteration.

Everyone will leave with a small body of monoprints and a reusable stamp cast from a personal object.

Guest artist workshops is a curated series that invites contemporary artists to share their practice. Workshop includes an artist talk and a hands-on project. Topics range from technical printmaking skills to the bigger ideas printmaking can carry, reflecting our interest in the medium as craft, tool, and mode of expression.

Bio

Jaclyn Jacunski is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist, curator, and printmaker whose work moves between drawing, print, and installation, often built from materials scavenged from building sites in changing neighborhoods. She's drawn to how objects and surfaces carry their own histories, using processes like casting, transfer, and repetition to let materials shape the image rather than simply illustrate an idea. Jacunski holds an MFA in Printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she spent nearly a decade directing community-based art and design programming on Chicago's West Side. She is Co-Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago and maintains an active studio and teaching practice rooted in printmaking's tradition of accessibility and repetition.
