Process Spotlight: Chine Collé

  • Campfire Printing Press 2415 W 19th St, 2C Chicago, IL 60608 (map)
November 18 | Process Spotlight: Chine Collé
from $0.00

Chine collé (pronounced "sheen-koh-LAY") is a print process where a thin piece of paper (gampi, kozo, and other delicate tissue) is adhered to a heavier backing paper at the same time as a relief or intaglio image is printed. This technique is used to add areas of color to otherwise monochromatic prints and to capture delicate details that might not come through on a more textured paper stock.

With chine collé, the paper is bonded during the printing process itself, which improves registration and prevents lifting, warping, yellowing, and brittleness (all typical issues with collage). Traditional chine collé materials, like wheat paste, are stable, reversible, and archival.

We'll explore a variety of ways to prepare and apply paste, register prepared paper, and combine with inked plates on press.

To practice, we will play with a variety of colored papers, all provided by Campfire, to create a variety of playful chin collé “color studies”. Participants are also welcome to bring their own small etching or relief plate* (4” x 6” or similar) to practice with.

*This session will not teach inking or printing. Artists who bring their own plates should be comfortable printing independently. Brayers, tartletans, and black ink will be available for use.
